Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about the game, the player data, and your account

New here? The short version: name a real player, and the first letter of your player's first name has to match the first letter of the previous player's last name. For the full rules and strategy, read How to Play.

Is Sports Name Game really free?

Yes. The game is completely free to play, with no paid tier and nothing to buy. The site is supported by advertising, which is what keeps it free for everyone.

Do I need an account to play?

No. You can play as a guest right away. Signing in is optional — it saves your personal stats (your high scores and the players you name most often) so they're waiting for you when you come back. Sign-in uses Google or a 6-digit email code; there is no password to create or remember.

Which players count as valid answers?

Real MLB, NFL, and NBA players from the 1970–2026 era, plus select Hall of Fame legends from before 1970 in each league. The pools are big: more than 11,000 MLB players, 27,000 NFL players, and 4,000 NBA players, rebuilt from authoritative league sources.

Why wasn't my player accepted?

The most common reasons, in order:

Does spelling have to be exact?

No. Close misspellings are accepted ("Brett Boone" matches Bret Boone), accents are handled automatically, and Jr./Sr. suffixes are optional. The game only pushes back when a name is too far off to match confidently.

How do the leaderboards work?

Each league has a daily top score and an all-time best, shared across all players. Leaderboard entries are anonymous — only the score is shown, never your name or email. Your private stats box (visible only to you when signed in) tracks your own bests.

How do I report a missing player?

Use the "Can't find a player?" button on the home screen. Reports go straight to us, and confirmed missing players are added in the next data update.

What information do you collect about me?

As little as the game needs. Guests can play with no account at all. If you sign in, we store your email address solely to save your scores and stats — we never sell your information. The full details, including how advertising cookies work, are in our Privacy Policy.

How do I delete my account?

Sign in, open your stats box on the home screen, and choose Delete account. That removes your account and the stats tied to it.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. Sports Name Game runs in any modern browser — phone, tablet, or computer — with no app to install. The layout adapts to your screen, and there's a dark mode toggle in the header if you prefer it.

Will you add more leagues?

MLB, NFL, and NBA are the current lineup. We're always considering more — if there's a league you want, tell us using the contact address below.
